The “water route”comprises “Le Fonti” together with the “I lavatoi”, and the well. They are all part of the Water route itinerary of Paciano. Le fonti are older than “I lavatoi”, and have been re-adapted many times during the centuries. They are situated in an amphitheatre made of stone encircled by holm oaks, where it is also possible to go for picnics.
A coat of arms of Paciano reminds us that the owner is the Municipality. The springs are situated opposite one of the main town gates, porta Rastrella. The area is cool and shady, and wooden benches scattered among the trees make it possible to sit while waiting one’s turn to take water from the springs.
The water springs are natural.
They have always been used as a water supply and to provide water for animals and cattle.
There are taps from which one can draw water and two basins.
According to the historical archive of the Comune, a project to enlarge the springs was carried out in order to avoid the drying up of the water.
Once bottled water became popular many local residents changed their habits and fewer now use the water springs as the source of their drinking water, although there are many fond memories of the place.
