The medieval centre of Paciano opens to the surrounding countryside by way of its three medieval gates or “porta”. Still today the gates serve as reference points, where people make appointments to meet or as landmarks for visitors.
The Porta Fiorentina gate faces onto Piazza Santa Maria. This very well-preserved gate allows us to conjure up images of the ancient and massive medieval doors that once guarded the town. The gate overlooks the public gardens and the Church of Santa Maria, and if you can lift your gaze above the majestic holm oak trees that ring the gardens you’ll see a vast swathe of eastern Tuscany opening up before you, from Cetona to Cortona, by way of Montepulciano.
